In a tragic overnight assault, gunmen targeted the official residence of a senior police officer in Jigawa State, resulting in the death of one police constable and leaving another injured.
Details of the Midnight Assault
The violent incident occurred at the home of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Aujara, located within the Jahun Local Government Area. Unknown attackers, suspected to be armed herders, launched their assault unexpectedly around midnight, managing to overpower the officers who were on duty at the residence.
During the confrontation, Police Constable Nura Garba Jahun sustained fatal injuries. A second officer on duty was also wounded in the attack. Constable Nura was rushed to the Jahun General Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed his death. He has since been laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites.
Family's Shock and Community Reaction
The family of the slain officer expressed profound shock and grief. His father, Malam Garba Jahun, remembered his son as a gentle and disciplined man. "He had not spent long in the service. May his soul rest in perfect peace," the grieving father stated.
He further revealed that the family is still awaiting a comprehensive briefing from the police authorities regarding the circumstances that led to the attack. "We don't know the cause. They came, condoled with us and left. Maybe later we will know more," he added.
Community sources noted a puzzling detail: nothing was reported stolen from the DPO's residence during the attack, raising questions about the assailants' primary motive.
Official Responses and Ongoing Investigation
When contacted for comment on Monday, the spokesperson for the Jigawa State Police Command, SP Lawan Shi'isu Adam, indicated that he had not yet received an official briefing on the incident.
The District Head of Aujara, Alhaji Aminu Dankade, confirmed the killing in a post on his official Facebook page, where he offered prayers for the repose of the deceased officer's soul.
Police authorities have stated that a full investigation into the attack will be launched to uncover the identities of the perpetrators and the precise reasons behind the violent assault on the police residence.
