Borno Police Implement Tricycle Movement Restriction for Eid-el-Fitr Security
The Borno State Police Command has officially announced a temporary ban on the movement of tricycles, commonly known as Keke Napep, throughout the state during the two-day Eid-el-Fitr celebration. This decisive measure is designed to guarantee a seamless and peaceful observance of the festival, which marks the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan. The restriction was disclosed on Thursday in Maiduguri via a statement released by the Command's spokesperson, Nahum Daso.
Enhanced Security Coordination and Public Safety
Daso emphasized that the police are constitutionally mandated to protect lives and property, and as such, the command has established a comprehensive security framework to ensure safety during the festivities. The restriction will be enforced on Friday, February 20, 2026, from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (noon), with the primary objectives of improving security coordination, facilitating effective crowd management, and mitigating potential threats to public safety. Residents are strongly urged to adhere strictly to this directive throughout the Sallah period.
In addition to the tricycle ban, the command has advised worshippers to attend Eid prayers at designated grounds nearest to their homes. This recommendation aims to minimize unnecessary movement and prevent overcrowding at prayer venues and mosques, thereby reducing risks associated with large gatherings.
Deployment of Security Personnel and Proactive Measures
The police have collaborated with other security agencies to deploy adequate personnel to key locations, including Eid prayer grounds, markets, motor parks, and other vulnerable areas. These deployments are focused on crowd control, access regulation, traffic management, and general surveillance to maintain order. Furthermore, operatives from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit have been strategically positioned at major gathering points to conduct thorough screenings of individuals and items entering prayer venues. This proactive approach is intended to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure a secure environment for all celebrants.
Leadership Directives and Community Vigilance
Commissioner of Police Naziru Abdulmajid has issued directives to all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, tactical units, and intelligence operatives to intensify visibility policing, intelligence-led operations, and sustained patrols during the festive period. These efforts will be carried out with a commitment to professionalism and respect for citizens' rights. The command has also called on residents to remain vigilant, celebrate responsibly, and promptly report any suspicious movements or objects to the nearest police station. Parents and guardians are specifically advised to closely monitor their children, especially in crowded settings, to enhance overall safety.
