Major Boost for Nigeria's Security as Police Recruitment Committee Inaugurated
The Nigeria Police Force and Police Service Commission have taken a significant step toward strengthening national security by establishing a high-powered joint committee to oversee the recruitment of 30,000 new police officers. This initiative follows a presidential directive aimed at bolstering the numerical strength of the police force across the country.
Committee Formation and Mandate
The joint Ad-hoc Committee was officially inaugurated on Wednesday, 26th November, 2025 at the Police Service Commission Corporate Headquarters in Jabi, Abuja. The ceremony was presided over by the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (rtd), who emphasized the critical nature of this collaboration between the two institutions.
The primary mandate of this committee is to create a seamless, transparent, and efficient recruitment process that will ensure the exercise meets the highest standards of integrity and merit. The committee will work collaboratively to brainstorm and implement strategies that guarantee fairness throughout the recruitment exercise.
Leadership Commitment to Transparency
During the inauguration ceremony, the Police Service Commission Chairman, represented by DIG (Bar) Taiwo Lakanu (rtd), stressed the importance of this partnership. Lakanu, who also serves as Chairman of the Nigeria Police Force Matters Committee, reiterated the commission's dedication to ensuring that the recruitment follows established guidelines and maintains absolute fairness.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, was represented at the event by CP Edwin Eloho from the Department of Training and Development at Force Headquarters. Egbetokun emphasized that this massive recruitment drive is essential for strengthening the police force's capacity to effectively serve and protect Nigerian citizens.
The IGP affirmed the Nigeria Police Force's full cooperation with the Police Service Commission to ensure the timely and successful achievement of this national objective. He described the committee's inauguration as a critical step forward in the Federal Government's commitment to addressing security challenges and improving the police-to-citizen ratio nationwide.
Institutional Roles and National Impact
The Police Service Commission, as the Federal Executive Body empowered to appoint, promote, dismiss, and exercise disciplinary control over police officers (except the IGP), plays a crucial role in this recruitment process. Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force remains the principal law enforcement agency in Nigeria, tasked with preventing and detecting crime, protecting lives and property, and maintaining public order and safety.
This recruitment initiative represents one of the largest police recruitment drives in recent Nigerian history and is expected to significantly enhance the country's security architecture. The successful implementation of this exercise will contribute to better policing outcomes and improved safety for all Nigerians.
