The Delta State Police Command has launched a comprehensive security initiative to ensure peace and safety throughout the Christmas and New Year celebrations. Commissioner of Police Olufemi Abaniwonda has ordered a significant mobilization of officers across the state.
Statewide Deployment of Police Personnel
In a statement released on Tuesday by the command's spokesperson, Bright Edafe, the police chief mandated a "massive deployment" of personnel. This operation is designed to cover the periods before, during, and after the festive season to protect lives, property, and public gatherings.
Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and Tactical Commanders have received specific instructions. They must identify key celebration spots, relaxation areas, and potential flashpoints for criminal activity and position officers accordingly.
Strategic Patrols on Highways and Metropolis
Specialized patrol teams have been stationed along crucial travel corridors. These units include the Dragon Patrol, Safer Highways, Quick Response Squad, Rapid Response Squad, CP-SAT, and Eagle-Net squads.
Key areas of focus include:
- The busy Asaba–Onitsha Head Bridge.
- The route from Anwai Campus Gate to Illah.
- The Onicha-Ugbo–Idumuje-Ugboko axis.
- PTI and DSC roundabouts.
- Major highways connecting Asaba, Agbor, Abraka, Eku, Kwale, Ughelli, and Sapele.
Within the Asaba capital city, heavy police presence is confirmed at locations known for congestion and street crimes. These spots are Summit Junction, Inter-Bau Roundabout, Federal Medical Centre Roundabout, Ogbe-Ogonogo Market, Government House Gate, Airport Junction, and several intersections along Nnebisi Road.
Traffic Control and Waterways Security
Managing the expected surge in vehicular movement is a top priority. Police and traffic wardens have been assigned specifically to control traffic, especially around the Asaba–Onitsha Head Bridge and the perpetually busy DSC and Effurun roundabouts.
The DPOs of ‘B’ and ‘C’ Divisions in Asaba, along with the State Traffic Officer, will coordinate with other security agencies to ensure smooth traffic flow.
In the Warri, Effurun, and surrounding areas, the Ekpan and Ebrumede divisions will intensify their ground patrols. Simultaneously, the Marine Police have been deployed to waterways in Escravos, Burutu, and Warri. Their mission is to curb sea piracy, illegal bunkering, and attacks on waterway traders and travelers.
Operation Show of Force and Public Reaction
The Command also confirmed the start of a continuous "Operation Show of Force" across Delta State. This operation began on Sunday, December 21, 2025, and is under the direct supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
While the police leadership has appealed to residents to be law-abiding and cooperate with security agencies, the scale of the deployment has sparked renewed public discussion. Many are debating the long-term effectiveness of such heavy security mobilizations during festive seasons compared to sustained crime-fighting strategies year-round.
