IGP Tunji Disu Honors Predecessor Kayode Egbetokun for Exemplary Policing and National Service
Outgoing Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun officially handed over leadership to his successor, Tunji Disu, on Tuesday, marking a significant transition in Nigeria's law enforcement hierarchy.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has delivered a heartfelt tribute to his predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun, highlighting his remarkable contributions to modern policing and national development. Disu's commendation was expressed during a grand reception organized by the Yewa Peoples Development Council in partnership with the Yewa Traditional Council, held in Ilaro, Ogun State, to honor the retired police chief.
Celebrating a Legacy of Service and Integrity
Represented by Assistant Inspector-General of Police Olohundare Jimoh from Zone 2, Onikan, Disu praised Egbetokun as a distinguished and eminent son of Yewaland. The event, themed "Celebrating a Life of Service, Integrity and Leadership: The Smartest and Mathematical IGP," recognized Egbetokun's exemplary discipline and unwavering commitment over his 35-year career.
Disu emphasized that Egbetokun's tenure as Inspector-General achieved notable successes in crime prevention, control, and management, leading to a measurable reduction in violent crimes and other criminal activities nationwide. "His selflessness, compassionate leadership, and efforts at strengthening the Nigeria Police Force will remain indelible in the hearts of officers and men of the force," Disu stated.
Strengthening Security and Public Trust
He further noted that Egbetokun provided robust leadership in addressing emerging security challenges, ensuring the police remained responsive and focused on constitutional duties. "His tenure contributed meaningfully to reinforcing public confidence in policing and advancing institutional reforms. As he retires from active service, he does so with honour, dignity, and a legacy that will continue to serve as a reference point in the development of modern policing in Nigeria," Disu added.
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, represented by State Head of Service Kehinde Onasanya, described the retired IGP as a model of professionalism, integrity, and patriotism. Abiodun highlighted Egbetokun's discipline, courage, and dedication, noting his historic achievement as the first indigene of Ogun State to rise to the position of Inspector-General of Police.
Regional and National Accolades
Senator Solomon Adeola, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, lauded Egbetokun for representing Yewaland and Ogun State with distinction. He commended the retired IGP for facilitating the establishment of a Police College in Erinja and deploying Mopol Base 84 to Ilaro, both crucial for enhancing regional security and development.
Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, the Olu and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, described Egbetokun as a visionary leader who prioritized his people's future. Similarly, Prof. Rahamon Bello, Chairman of the Yewa Peoples Development Council, praised Egbetokun's thorough preparation and excellent performance in office, also commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his appointment.
"As IGP, Egbetokun championed a policing philosophy rooted in professionalism and community engagement. He reinforced accountability within the force and improved coordination under his leadership," Bello said, adding that Egbetokun's legacy is defined by integrity, service, and a lifelong commitment to national progress.
The event was attended by dignitaries including Minister of State for Health Dr. Iziaq Kunle Salako, traditional rulers from Yewaland, members of the Ogun State Executive Council, and other prominent personalities, underscoring the widespread recognition of Egbetokun's impactful career.
