Driver in Anthony Joshua's Accident Arrested by Police

Authorities in Ogun State have made a significant arrest in connection with the serious road accident involving world-famous boxer Anthony Joshua. The police have taken into custody the individual who was behind the wheel of the Lexus SUV carrying the champion when it crashed.

Police Confirm Driver's Arrest

The Ogun State Police Command, through its spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi, officially confirmed the arrest in a statement released on Thursday, January 1, 2026. This development follows the tragic incident that occurred on Monday, December 29, along the Danco axis of the busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

The police statement clarified the situation, noting: “The driver of the Lexus SUV in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident case is currently in custody. Investigations are ongoing”. The arrest marks a pivotal step in the official probe into the causes of the collision.

Details of the Tragic Accident

The crash involved the vehicle transporting the two-time former heavyweight world champion and Olympic gold medalist, Anthony Joshua. Tragically, the accident resulted in the deaths of two of Joshua's close associates and team members who were traveling with him.

Following the collision, Joshua received medical care for minor injuries. His promoter, Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing, stated that the boxer had been under observation at Lagoon Hospital in Lagos as part of his recovery process.

Public Reaction and Calls for Justice

The police announcement has sparked a wave of reactions from Nigerians online, highlighting broader concerns about road safety and justice.

One user, Osasumwen, directly accused the driver, named as Kayode Adeniyi, and called for serious legal consequences: "Kayode Adeniyi... must face prosecution for reckless driving, while the driver + owner of the stationary truck the Lexus collided with should be identified and persecuted."

Other comments questioned the consistency of law enforcement. User Dr Rollynce expressed skepticism, stating: "I do not appreciate selective justice. How many commercial drivers who survived an accident have you detained for questioning?"

Meanwhile, some focused on systemic issues. A.M.O pointed to a common problem on Nigerian highways: "I have driven on that road multiple times last month. The way VIPs speed on that road is alarming. Speed limit enforcement has to be done; otherwise, things like these will not stop."

The arrest ensures the driver will remain available to authorities as the Ogun State Police Command continues its investigation into the precise circumstances that led to the fatal crash. The case has drawn intense national and international attention due to Joshua's global celebrity status.
