The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested several of its officers for allegedly assaulting a man, Arinze Eze, causing an injury that affected one of his eyes. The incident occurred when Eze and the policemen had an altercation in Ishieke, Ebonyi Local Government Area, while he was returning to his hometown, Ngbo, in Ohaukwu LGA.
Police Confirm Arrests and Investigation
The command's spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, July 7, 2026. He said the policemen involved in the alleged brutality had been identified and arrested. According to the PPRO, the officers will face appropriate disciplinary procedures based on the investigation's outcome.
"Ebonyi State Police Command has officially identified and detained the officers involved in the recent altercation with a civilian in Ohaukwu LGA," the statement read.
Commissioner Orders Transfer and Probe
"CP Hope Urunwa Okafor has ordered the immediate transfer of the officers to Command Headquarters. The State CID has commenced a thorough and transparent investigation."
The command extended its deepest sympathies to the victim, who is currently receiving medical treatment at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.
Zero Tolerance for Brutality
"Ebonyi State Police Command maintains a ZERO-TOLERANCE policy for brutality, indiscipline, or any misconduct that brings the Force into disrepute. Any officer found culpable will face strict disciplinary action. We remain committed to protecting the fundamental rights of all citizens," the statement added.
