In a significant move to fortify safety within a major healthcare facility, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has officially opened a new, ultra-modern police post at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
A Strategic Response to Insecurity
The commissioning ceremony, held on 18 December 2025, was a collaborative event featuring CP Agbonika and the Chief Medical Director of UBTH, Prof. (Mrs) Idia Ize-Iyamu. The police chief praised the hospital management for taking the initiative, stating that this new facility would greatly improve the security framework for the hospital and its surrounding areas in Benin City.
Agbonika firmly pledged the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to upholding law and order within the UBTH and the broader University of Benin (UNIBEN) community. This move is seen as a direct response to the prevailing security challenges in the region, aiming to create a safer environment for critical public infrastructure.
A First-of-its-Kind, Fully Equipped Facility
In her address, Prof. Ize-Iyamu emphasized the critical importance of the project. She explained that as a tertiary institution providing 24/7 services, UBTH caters to a vast population of patients, staff, students, and visitors. She stressed that a secure environment is non-negotiable for effective emergency response, uninterrupted clinical services, staff confidence, and public trust.
The newly commissioned post is the first dedicated police facility of its kind within the hospital. It is a purpose-built structure that comes fully furnished. A key feature is its dedicated solar power installation, designed to prevent operational disruptions due to power outages and ensure continuous service.
"The facility is further equipped with air-conditioning systems, refrigeration units and other essential infrastructure required for effective policing and rapid response," Ize-Iyamu detailed. She reaffirmed the hospital's commitment to sustained collaboration with the police and other security agencies to maintain peace within the hospital environment, noting that security directly supports clinical excellence.
