The Edo State Police Command has taken decisive action in response to escalating security challenges in the Ekpoma area, announcing the immediate redeployment of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for the region.
New Leadership for Ekpoma Division
In a significant move confirmed on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, the command posted CSP Tomofe Nwabueze as the new Divisional Police Officer for Ekpoma. The police spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, stated that Nwabueze is to assume office "with immediate effect."
This strategic repositioning was ordered by the Commissioner of Police for Edo State Command, Monday Agbonika, as part of an ongoing security assessment of the troubled area. The reorganization of the Ekpoma Division aims to address the pressing security concerns head-on.
Unrest and Violence Prompt Action
The redeployment comes against a backdrop of rising insecurity in Ekpoma, located in the Esan West Local Government Area. Tensions boiled over recently when a peaceful protest by residents concerning rampant kidnappings and the killing of a youth turned violent.
In a dramatic expression of their grievances, residents blocked a major highway. The situation deteriorated further when some youths reportedly:
- Attacked traders at the local livestock market.
- Vandalised the palace of the Onojie of Ekpoma, Zaiki Anthony Abumere II.
Edo State Governor, Okpebholo, strongly condemned these acts of violence and destruction.
Wider Consequences and Government Response
The fallout from the unrest has had significant ripple effects across the senatorial district. In a precautionary measure, the Edo State Government has postponed the resumption of all public and private schools in the Edo Central Senatorial District.
This decision underscores the severity of the security situation and the government's priority on ensuring the safety of students and staff before academic activities can resume.
The police command's statement emphasized that the posting of CSP Nwabueze is a direct component of the force's strategic efforts to restore peace and order in Ekpoma. All eyes are now on the new DPO to implement effective measures that will curb kidnappings, address communal grievances, and prevent further violence in the area.
