AIG Jimoh Seeks Cooperation as Fatai Assumes Role as Lagos Police Commissioner

Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Olohundare Moshood Jimoh has called for stakeholder cooperation as Tijani Olayiwola Fatai takes office as the new Commissioner of Police for Lagos State. This transition marks a significant leadership change in the state's security apparatus, with Jimoh redeployed to head Zone 2 Command in Onikan, Lagos.

Leadership Transition and Handover Ceremony

Deputy Commissioner of Police Tijani Olayiwola Fatai, previously in charge of Operations, has been appointed as the 42nd Commissioner of Police for Lagos. He succeeds AIG Jimoh, who assumed office in February 2025, replacing Olanrewaju Ishola after a 21-week tenure. During the handover ceremony, Jimoh expressed confidence in Fatai's capabilities and urged residents and stakeholders to support the new commissioner.

"I have no doubt in the new CP's capacity. As I move on, I urge all stakeholders to cooperate with him," Jimoh stated. He highlighted improvements in Lagos's security situation during his one year and one month in office, crediting the state government under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for enhancing officer welfare.

"The Lagos State Government increased monthly allowances for officers—from Assistant Commissioner of Police to the rank-and-file—making the structure in the Lagos State Police Command second to none. We made significant strides in improving security," he added.

New Commissioner's Vision and Priorities

In his inaugural remarks, Commissioner Fatai pledged to sustain and build upon existing security frameworks, emphasizing that a secure environment is crucial for economic growth and public trust. He outlined a comprehensive policing strategy focused on proactive, intelligence-led, technology-driven, and community-based approaches.

"Criminal elements will find no safe haven in Lagos. We will strengthen community engagement as a cornerstone of our policing strategy and continue to build trust with residents as partners in progress," Fatai declared. He also stressed the importance of media collaboration for accurate information dissemination and highlighted youth engagement as a key priority to foster peace and prevent crime.

On inter-agency cooperation, Fatai confirmed that the command would work closely with the military, Department of State Services, National Intelligence Agency, Nigeria Immigration Service, and other security agencies to enhance intelligence sharing and coordinated operations.

Discipline, Welfare, and Operational Focus

Addressing officers, Fatai emphasized strict enforcement of discipline, professionalism, and integrity, with zero tolerance for police brutality and misconduct. "Any personnel found wanting will be dealt with in accordance with extant laws and regulations," he warned. He assured that officer welfare, training, and motivation would receive attention to improve service delivery.

Key operational priorities include:

  • Reducing crime to minimal levels
  • Tackling cultism and violent crimes
  • Improving road discipline
  • Strengthening visibility policing
  • Restoring peace in identified flashpoints

Fatai encouraged the public to report complaints or rights violations through the Complaint Response Unit via 09111111150 for calls and 09111111151 for WhatsApp.

Expansion of Police Infrastructure

In a related development, the Inspector-General of Police has approved the creation of seven new police divisions in Lagos State to enhance security coverage. Areas such as Lekki Phase 1 and Lekki Phase II are among those set to benefit from this expansion, aiming to improve response times and community policing efforts.

"Let me assure the government and people of Lagos State that under my leadership, the command will remain committed, responsive, and accountable," Fatai concluded, reinforcing his commitment to maintaining and advancing security standards in the state.
