IGP Disu Honors Fallen Police Officers, Vows Accountability on National Police Day

Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu delivered a powerful address during the second edition of National Police Day, paying solemn tribute to police personnel who have sacrificed their lives in service to Nigeria. Speaking at the first National Police Day under his leadership, the IGP emphasized that every life lost represents a profound debt on the police conscience and serves as a call for continuous improvement in service delivery.

Tribute to Fallen Heroes

IGP Disu expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for institutionalizing National Police Day, describing it as more than symbolic but rather a statement of belief in the Nigeria Police Force's capacity for reform and improved service. He specifically honored the men and women who left their homes in uniform and never returned, acknowledging their ultimate sacrifice for duty and country.

"Today, we bow our heads in honour of our fallen heroes," Disu stated. "Men and women who left their homes in uniform and never returned. They did not die for applause. They did not die for recognition. They died for duty. For country. For all of us."

The police chief assured families of deceased officers that they would always have the support of the police force, promising that their loved ones would be remembered not just in ceremonies but through the standards upheld daily by the police institution.

Accountability and Discipline

In a significant warning to the police force, IGP Disu declared that erring officers would face disciplinary actions regardless of their rank or influence. He emphasized that rank would not shield wrongdoing, uniform would never excuse abuse, and authority would never override the rule of law.

"Let me be unequivocal; there will be no sacred cows," Disu asserted. "Accountability under my leadership will be firm, fair, and without exception."

The Inspector General acknowledged the risks, sacrifices, and pressures faced by police officers across Nigeria while simultaneously calling for a rise above indiscipline and misconduct. He stressed that the Nigeria Police Force must elevate itself above actions that diminish the honor of the uniform.

Welfare and Support for Officers

Balancing his accountability message with support for dedicated personnel, IGP Disu promised improved welfare, strengthened capacity, and proper equipment for officers who perform their duties correctly. He emphasized that a respected and professional police force must be built on officers who receive adequate support, training, and dignified treatment.

"This leadership will stand firmly with every officer who does what is right," Disu affirmed. "We will improve your welfare. We will strengthen your capacity. We will equip you properly."

Community Partnership and Modernization

IGP Disu called for enhanced collaboration with traditional rulers, community leaders, civil society organizations, and the media, describing them as essential partners in effective policing. He acknowledged the distance that has grown between the police and the public and expressed determination to close that gap through more accountable, professional, and human-focused policing.

The police chief outlined ongoing modernization efforts, including:

  • New mechanisms for internal discipline and public accountability
  • Investment in training, technology, and community engagement
  • Development of intelligence-led, technology-driven, and community-focused policing
  • Strengthened investigative capacity and modernized operations

"We are building a Police Force that is intelligence-led, technology-driven, and community-focused," Disu explained. "Our actions will be guided not by force alone, but by intelligence, professionalism, and respect for human rights."

IGP Disu concluded by emphasizing that policing in the 21st century must evolve deliberately, with the Nigeria Police Force committed to becoming an institution that protects rather than intimidates, partners rather than alienates, and earns respect rather than instills fear.
