IGP Tunji Disu Issues Firm Warning to Police Officers: No Sacred Cows in Misconduct Cases

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, has delivered a resolute message to officers across the force, declaring that his administration will not tolerate any form of misconduct. Speaking at a police function shortly after being sworn into office by President Tinubu on March 4, Disu emphasized that officers found culpable will face severe consequences, including dismissal or prosecution where necessary.

Rank and Seniority Offer No Protection, Says IGP

Disu made it clear that the rank or seniority of any officer will not serve as a shield if they are found wanting in their duties. He stated, "We will enforce the rule of law and strengthen the moral authority upon which effective policing is built. Our internal accountability mechanism will be strengthened, revitalized, and insulated from undue influences." This move aims to ensure that all officers are held to the same high standards, regardless of their position within the force.

Empowering Accountability Units for Decisive Action

To back up his words, the IGP announced that key accountability bodies within the police will be empowered to operate with greater independence and decisiveness. The Force Provost and the Complaint Response Unit will be tasked with investigating misconduct without fear or favor, ensuring that cases are handled transparently and fairly. Disu stressed that this is crucial for rebuilding public trust and reinforcing discipline among officers.

He elaborated, "The message must be clear. No officer is above the law. Citizens must feel safe and encouraged to report wrongdoings, while officers must understand that loyalty to the force does not extend to shielding misconduct or tolerating indiscipline." This approach is designed to create a culture of accountability where both the public and police personnel can rely on a robust system of checks and balances.

Swift Disciplinary Actions to Deter Future Misconduct

Under Disu's leadership, officers found guilty of misconduct will face swift disciplinary actions. The IGP warned, "Under this leadership, there will be no sacred cows. Ranks, seniority, or position will offer no protection. Officers found culpable will face swift disciplinary action, including dismissal or prosecution where applicable." This firm stance is intended to act as a deterrent, preventing future incidents and promoting a more disciplined force.

Disu concluded by affirming that his administration will act fairly, firmly, and transparently to restore public confidence in the Nigerian police. By prioritizing accountability and discipline, he aims to transform the force into a more effective and trusted institution, capable of serving the nation with integrity and professionalism.
