Lagos Police Commissioner Declares War on Criminal Elements
The newly appointed Commissioner of Police for Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, has issued a stern warning to criminal elements operating within the state, declaring unequivocally that they will find no safe haven under his leadership. This declaration came during his inaugural address following a brief handover ceremony with his predecessor, AIG Olorundare Moshood, where he outlined his comprehensive policy thrust anchored firmly on continuity, professionalism, and unwavering integrity.
Continuity with a Futuristic Approach
CP Fatai emphasized that his leadership represents a continuation of the significant strides achieved under the previous administration, rather than a complete overhaul. "I was part and parcel of the previous administration for about three-quarters of its tenure. So, whatever successes were recorded, I believe I contributed to them. This is not entirely new to me, but a continuation with a futuristic approach," he stated confidently. He stressed that the Command will sustain and build upon the existing security architecture and operational strategies already established, recognizing Lagos's unique position as Nigeria's economic hub and a leading mega city in sub-Saharan Africa transitioning into a smart city.
Proactive and Technology-Driven Policing Strategies
Acknowledging the complex security challenges presented by Lagos, CP Fatai detailed his commitment to deploying proactive, intelligence-led, and technology-driven strategies to effectively combat crime. "We are fully aware that a secure environment is fundamental to economic growth and public confidence, and we are prepared to meet these challenges head-on," he asserted. The Lagos State Police Command remains resolute in its mandate to protect lives and property, adopting a multifaceted approach that includes:
- Proactive policing to prevent crimes before they occur
- Intelligence-led operations targeting criminal networks
- Technology-driven solutions for enhanced surveillance and response
- Community-based policing to foster trust and cooperation
"Criminal elements and violators of the law will find no safe haven in Lagos," he reiterated, highlighting that community engagement will be strengthened as a cornerstone of the policing strategy. This involves building trust, deepening cooperation, and encouraging residents to view the Police as partners in progress.
Key Priorities and Inter-Agency Collaboration
CP Fatai outlined several operational priorities for the Command, including intensifying efforts to reduce crime, tackling cultism and violent offences, improving traffic discipline, enhancing visibility policing, and restoring peace in identified flashpoints. He also emphasized the importance of inter-agency cooperation, noting that the Police will continue to work closely with the military and other security agencies to enhance intelligence sharing and coordinated operations, ensuring a unified front against criminal activities.
Discipline, Professionalism, and Accountability
Addressing officers and men of the Command, CP Fatai stressed that discipline, professionalism, and integrity would be non-negotiable under his leadership. He announced a zero-tolerance policy for police brutality and unprofessional conduct, ensuring that all operations are guided by the rule of law and strict respect for fundamental human rights. "Any personnel found wanting will be dealt with in accordance with extant laws," he warned, while also assuring that personnel welfare and training would receive due attention to maintain high standards.
Public Engagement and Complaint Channels
CP Fatai urged residents to actively participate in maintaining security by reporting misconduct and rights violations through available channels. He provided specific contact details for the Complaint Response Unit: 09111111150 for calls and 09111111151 for WhatsApp, in addition to the Public Relations Office and nearest police stations. "Prompt and effective response is assured. If you see something, say something. Security is a collective responsibility," he encouraged, reinforcing the message that public cooperation is vital for success.
In his closing remarks, CP Fatai expressed confidence in his understanding of Lagos's policing landscape and his ability to address emerging challenges. "I understand the terrain and the peculiarities of policing Lagos. I know the kind of interventions to put in place to address issues as they arise, and I can assure residents that we will keep crime at the barest minimum," he concluded, assuring the government and people of Lagos State that under his leadership, the Command will remain committed, responsive, and accountable in its mission to ensure safety and security for all.
