Lagos Police Commissioner Withdraws Task Force from Traffic Enforcement Duties
In a significant move aimed at restructuring traffic management operations, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, has issued a directive for the immediate and complete withdrawal of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit, commonly known as the Task Force, from all traffic control and traffic contravention enforcement activities across the state.
The announcement was made public through an official statement released by the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, on April 1, 2026. The statement emphasized that this decision is part of ongoing efforts to streamline traffic management operations, ensuring greater professionalism, accountability, and clarity in the discharge of duties.
Clarification on Unit's Remaining Responsibilities
It is important to note that while the unit has been withdrawn from traffic-related responsibilities, all other assigned duties and operational mandates of the unit remain fully in force. This includes its primary functions related to environmental sanitation and special offences, which will continue to be enforced without interruption.
The Command also took the opportunity to enlighten members of the public that the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit is not the only task force operating within Lagos State. Residents and motorists are strongly advised to always verify the identity of personnel and agencies before making allegations or assertions, particularly in matters relating to traffic enforcement.
Commitment to Lawful Operations
The Lagos State Police Command remains committed to safeguarding lives and property while ensuring that all operations within the State are carried out in accordance with the law and best practices. Members of the public are encouraged to remain law-abiding and cooperate with all legitimate security agencies to maintain order and safety on the roads.
This directive marks a pivotal step in the state's approach to traffic management, aiming to reduce confusion and enhance efficiency in enforcement procedures. The move is expected to lead to more organized and transparent traffic control measures, benefiting both residents and motorists in Lagos.
