Authorities in three Nigerian states have initiated extensive security arrangements to ensure public safety during the Christmas and New Year festivities. The police commands in Ogun, Delta, and Imo states have announced the massive deployment of personnel and resources, involving collaborations with multiple security agencies.
Ogun State's Coordinated Joint Operations
The Ogun State Police Command, under Commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo, has launched a major joint security operation. The initiative brings together the military, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Amotekun Corps, the Ogun State Community Social Orientation and Security Corps (SO-SAFE), and the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN).
According to the command's spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, a significant number of personnel have been deployed to bolster patrols. The focus is on major highways, particularly the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway and the Sagamu/Ijebu-Ode road, to protect lives and property. The operation will utilize patrol vehicles, tactical teams, and intelligence assets to deter criminal activities throughout the celebrations.
Commissioner Ogunlowo has also ordered massive deployments for traffic control to ensure effective coverage and rapid response. He reiterated a ban on the use of fireworks and bangers for public safety and urged residents to celebrate responsibly while cooperating with security personnel.
Delta State's Statewide Security Plan
In Delta State, the Police Commissioner, Olufemi Abaniwonda, has ordered a comprehensive security operation. Command spokesperson Bright Edafe confirmed that Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders have been directed to deploy officers to major venues, relaxation spots, and identified flashpoints.
Key areas receiving heavy security presence include:
- Major corridors: Asaba/Onitsha Head Bridge, Anwai Campus Gate to Illah, and highways linking Asaba, Agbor, and Sapele.
- Asaba metropolis: Summit Junction, Inter-Bau Roundabout, Federal Medical Centre Roundabout, and Ogbe Ogonogo Market.
- Traffic hotspots: The DSC and Effurun roundabouts, with dedicated personnel for traffic management.
The Marine Police have also been deployed to waterways in Escravos, Burutu, and Warri to combat sea piracy and illegal bunkering. A continuous "Operation Show of Force" began on Sunday, December 21, 2025, under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
Imo State's Watertight Security Arrangements
The Imo State Police Command, led by Commissioner Aboki Danjuma, has implemented what it describes as a "watertight security" plan across all 27 local government areas. The command's spokesperson, Henry Okoye, stated that the measures were put in place in synergy with sister security agencies.
All Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers in the state have been directed to activate their security mechanisms to prevent any breaches. While wishing residents a happy celebration, CP Danjuma urged vigilance and law-abiding conduct. The public was advised to report any security concerns using the emergency number: 0803 477 3600.
The sweeping security deployments across these three states highlight the police's strategy to ensure a hitch-free festive season. However, these measures have also reignited public discussions on the effectiveness of such heavy security presences during peak holiday periods.
