Nasarawa Police Ban Tyre Burning for New Year, Eggon Carnival Tragedy Claims 4
Nasarawa Bans Tyre Burning, 4 Dead in Carnival Crash

The Nasarawa State Police Command has taken a decisive step to ensure a safe transition into the New Year by imposing a total ban on a popular but hazardous practice. Meanwhile, the state is mourning a separate tragedy that struck a cultural celebration.

Police Enforce Safety Measures for New Year Festivities

Commissioner of Police Shetima Jauro Mohammed has declared a complete prohibition on the burning of used tyres during crossover night activities on December 31, 2025. This annual practice, common in some celebrations, is now outlawed across the entire state.

The Commissioner has issued strict orders to all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to enforce this ban rigorously. Authorities are directed to arrest and prosecute anyone caught engaging in the act. The police command cites multiple critical reasons for this decision:

  • To protect government and private infrastructure from damage and defacement.
  • To prevent environmental pollution caused by the toxic smoke.
  • To ensure the free flow of traffic and overall public safety during the festivities.

CP Mohammed also extended the directive to vulcanisers, urging them to ensure proper disposal of used tyres at the close of business daily to prevent public access. Furthermore, he called on parents and guardians to warn their children and wards against participating in tyre burning or any related unlawful activities.

Tragic Accident Mars Eggon Carnival

In a separate and sorrowful incident, a festive event turned to tragedy in Nasarawa-Eggon Local Government Area. On Monday, December 30, 2025, an auto crash during the annual Eggon Carnival claimed the lives of four people and left several others injured.

The accident involved three trucks, with one reportedly ramming into the carnival procession. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that injured victims are receiving treatment at the Nasarawa-Eggon General Hospital.

FRSC Sector Commander Yahaya Sabo-Adikwu attributed the cause of the crash to reckless driving by the truck drivers. He confirmed that the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue of the Federal University of Lafia Teaching Hospital.

Community Calls for Action and Carnival Cancelled

An eyewitness at the scene supported the FRSC's preliminary assessment, stating that the trucks lost control as they approached the procession. The witness went further to call for a thorough investigation and mandatory drug tests for drivers of heavy-duty vehicles to prevent future occurrences.

In response to the devastating event, the organisers have announced the cancellation of the remainder of the 2025 Eggon Carnival. They expressed profound sorrow over the loss of life and extended their heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims.

The Nasarawa State Police Command reaffirms its commitment to a peaceful and secure New Year celebration for all residents, even as the community grapples with this dual reality of enforced safety and profound loss.
