Osun Shooting: Force Headquarters to Conduct Forensic Investigation
The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has declared its intention to implement a forensic investigation model into the tragic shooting incident that occurred in the Dada Estate area of Osogbo, Osun State, which led to the unfortunate and unnecessary loss of lives. This move underscores the force's commitment to thoroughness and accountability in handling such sensitive cases.
Police Response to Public Interest and Customs Statement
The Police Force has acknowledged the significant public interest surrounding the incident, as well as the recent statement issued by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on the matter. In a statement released by the Police Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Okon Placid, it was emphasized that while the police recognize the statutory duties of the NCS in anti-smuggling operations, the sanctity of human life remains the highest priority for the state.
DCP Placid further stated that the Inspector General of Police has taken note of the NCS's call for a harmonized investigation. Consequently, the NPF will collaborate with the Customs Service in the ongoing investigations, which are currently being led by the Osun State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). This joint effort aims to conduct the highest level of forensic diligence to ensure a comprehensive and transparent inquiry.
Details on Suspects and Evidence
The suspects involved in the incident, identified as Kolawole Suuti and Danjuma Samuel, remain in police custody to facilitate a transparent and unbiased investigation. The recovered exhibits from the scene, including a Beretta pistol with Breech No. 125024 and 9mm ballistic evidence, are undergoing specialized analysis. This process is designed to synchronize the facts with the operational Rules of Engagement (ROE), ensuring that all aspects of the case are meticulously examined.
Professional Relationship Between NPF and NCS
The NPF and NCS maintain a robust and professional relationship, and this incident is being treated as a matter of individual professional accountability rather than an inter-agency conflict. The police have urged the public to refrain from sensationalizing the event as a dispute between the two agencies. Both organizations are united in their pursuit of justice for the deceased and are working together to resolve the matter amicably.
The Force has extended its deepest condolences to the family of the victim and reaffirmed its commitment to reaching a conclusion that upholds the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This approach highlights the dedication of both agencies to maintaining public trust and ensuring that justice is served in a fair and transparent manner.
