Oyo Police Intensify Public Sensitization Against Electoral Violence and Ballot Snatching
The Nigeria Police Force in Oyo State has significantly amplified its appeals for public enlightenment regarding electoral conduct and road safety. This initiative forms a crucial component of the activities commemorating the annual National Police Day celebration, underscoring the force's commitment to proactive community engagement.
Strategic Call for Civic Responsibility
The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Abimbola Olugbenga, made this urgent call during a comprehensive sensitisation programme held at the Oyo State Police Headquarters. The event, thematically focused on “Sensitisation on Violence, Ballot Snatching and Related Offences,” successfully convened key stakeholders to deliberate on critical issues that directly impact public safety and the integrity of democratic processes.
Describing the lecture as both timely and essential, Commissioner Olugbenga articulated that the initiative represents a strategic and forward-thinking step towards fortifying civic responsibility. This is particularly pertinent as Nigeria progresses towards crucial junctures within its democratic cycle. He emphasized that public awareness remains an indispensable tool in the fight against electoral malpractice and in cultivating a peaceful environment before, during, and after elections.
Consequences of Electoral Offences
The police commissioner stressed the imperative for citizens to be fully cognizant of the severe legal and social consequences associated with engaging in acts that undermine electoral integrity. These include, but are not limited to, ballot snatching, political violence, and voter intimidation. According to his detailed remarks, such offences pose a dual threat: they not only severely compromise the credibility and legitimacy of elections but also endanger human lives and property, creating an atmosphere of fear and instability.
Expanding Focus to Road Safety
Beyond the immediate concerns of electoral security, Commissioner Olugbenga also highlighted the paramount importance of road safety, framing it as a shared responsibility between law enforcement authorities and all road users. He issued a clarion call for strict and unwavering adherence to traffic regulations, noting that such compliance is absolutely crucial for reducing the frequency of road accidents and safeguarding lives across the entire state.
Collaborative Policing and Community Engagement
Reaffirming the fundamental stance of the Nigeria Police Force, Commissioner Olugbenga stated unequivocally that effective and responsive policing cannot be achieved in isolation. Instead, it demands sustained collaboration, mutual respect, and a foundation of trust between law enforcement agencies and the public they serve. He elaborated that sensitisation programmes like this one serve as critical platforms for educating citizens and empowering them with the necessary knowledge to make informed and lawful decisions in their daily lives and during electoral periods.
Commissioner Olugbenga further urged all participants to actively engage in the discussions and to proactively take the core messages back to their respective communities. He maintained that collective efforts and robust community participation are indispensable in the shared mission of building a safer, more secure, and more peaceful society for all residents of Oyo State.
Support from Electoral Commission
In earlier remarks delivered at the event, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Oyo State, Adeniran Tella, represented by the Administrative Secretary of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Agnes Olutimi, also underscored the pressing need for intensified public enlightenment campaigns. He called for sustained media outreach and deep grassroots engagement to educate citizens comprehensively on the dangers and repercussions of ballot snatching, vote-buying, and other related electoral offences.
Furthermore, he issued a direct appeal to all political parties operating within the state. He urged them to actively promote peace by decisively shunning hate speech, ensuring proper and thorough training for their party agents on lawful conduct, and adhering strictly to all peace accords that have been brokered by relevant stakeholders. This multi-faceted approach, he suggested, is vital for ensuring credible and violence-free electoral processes.
