Security forces in Borno State have successfully prevented a major explosion in Maiduguri, the state capital, after discovering and safely neutralising a dangerous explosive device. The incident, which unfolded on Monday, December 16, 2025, sent a wave of tension through the community before being expertly defused.

Timely Discovery and Swift Police Response

The potential disaster was averted in the Chuskon area of Federal Low Cost, Maiduguri. According to the Borno State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Anipr, the alarm was raised at approximately 11:06 a.m. after vigilant residents spotted a suspicious object beneath a telecommunications mast. They immediately reported their find to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the ITE Police Division.

Upon receiving the report, the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, did not hesitate. He promptly ordered the Commander of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal–Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Base 13 in Maiduguri to mobilise a team to the scene. The specialised squad responded with urgency, moving to secure the area and assess the threat.

Neutralisation of the Device and Critical Findings

The EOD-CBRN team swiftly cordoned off the location, following strict safety protocols to protect the public. Their preliminary examination confirmed the object was indeed an Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) with two protruding wires. The experts determined it had been strategically planted by unidentified persons with the clear intent to cause significant damage and endanger lives.

Operating with precision, the bomb disposal unit successfully rendered the explosive device safe, eliminating the immediate danger. A subsequent search of the scene led to the recovery of several items, including a hand plier, a T-shirt, and a pair of shoes, which may provide clues for the ongoing investigation.

Community Engagement and Heightened Security Measures

Following the successful operation, police officers took the opportunity to engage with residents of the Chuskon community. They conducted sensitisation and safety awareness sessions, emphasising the critical importance of public vigilance, prompt reporting of suspicious objects, and continuous cooperation with security agencies.

In light of this incident, Commissioner of Police Abdulmajid has issued a directive to all Divisional Police Officers across Borno State. They are to intensify patrols and bolster security around critical public and private infrastructure, with a particular focus on communication facilities and other sensitive locations.

ASP Anipr reassured the public of the police command's unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property. He urged citizens to continue supporting security efforts by providing timely and credible information. An investigation into the planting of the device is actively ongoing. Normal activities have since resumed in the Federal Low Cost area, thanks to the swift action of the security forces.
