The Rivers State Police Command has officially declared a widely circulated social media video claiming to show Fulani herdsmen attacking a community as completely fabricated and misleading. The authorities have reassured residents that no such incident occurred anywhere in the state.
Police Expose Fabricated Footage
According to Police Spokesperson SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the viral video that emerged on Wednesday showing armed individuals clashing had no connection to Rivers State. In a statement issued in Port Harcourt, she emphasized that the footage was deliberately circulated by mischief-makers attempting to create panic among the public.
"The police command wishes to state unequivocally that these claims and reports are entirely false, misleading, and designed to incite panic among the public," SP Iringe-Koko stated. She described the narrative as a deliberate attempt to undermine the prevailing peace and stability in Rivers State.
Security Measures and Public Warning
The police spokesperson confirmed that security agencies are maintaining robust surveillance across all local government areas in Rivers State. The security deployments include operational patrol teams, surveillance units, and tactical squads positioned to respond promptly to any potential threats.
SP Iringe-Koko issued a strong warning against sharing unverified content, stating: "We urge the public to disregard this misinformation and exercise restraint in sharing unverified content that could spark unnecessary tension." The command emphasized that circulating false information could lead to sanctions under Nigeria's cybercrime laws.
Background of Tension in Rivers
The dismissal of the viral video comes amid existing security concerns in Rivers State. Recent reports indicated apprehension in Port Harcourt following an incident where unknown gunmen shot a security guard of the opposition Action People's Party (APP).
This shooting occurred just one month after the same party's secretariat was bombed. Sunny Wokekoro, the state chairman of APP, addressed journalists regarding the recent shooting incident, noting that details remain unclear and the injured security guard is currently receiving hospital treatment.
The police command has reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property while urging residents to remain calm, vigilant, and always verify information through official channels before sharing.
