The Lagos State Police Command has taken decisive action, arresting twelve individuals linked to the unauthorized promotion of the Oregun Traditional Egungun festival.
Festival Promotion Sparks Police Intervention
Authorities moved in after handbills and posters, attributed to the group Oje Parapo of Oregun, were widely shared on social media. These publications warned the public and announced restrictions on movement for the festival, which was scheduled for November 27 and 28, 2025.
The police command assessed that the circulation of these materials had already generated significant fear and apprehension among residents of the state.
Police Commissioner Orders Immediate Suspension
In response, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, directed the immediate suspension of the festival. The police command stated that the stoppage was necessary to ensure public safety, law and order, and the protection of life and property in Lagos.
"The command has declared that the event must not hold," a statement read. It further emphasized that any festival capable of threatening peace or heightening tension would not be permitted under any circumstances.
Warning Against Lawlessness and Future Prosecution
CP Jimoh issued a stern warning, reaffirming that Oje Parapo of Oregun should desist forthwith from holding the Egungun Festival as security could no longer be guaranteed. He stated that the "full weight of the law will be applied" to anyone attempting to undermine the peace and stability of Lagos.
This incident is not isolated. The command revealed that in similar circumstances at Mafoluku, Oshodi, within the Makinde Police Division, it also arrested 12 suspects on November 23, 2025. The CP confirmed that all suspects from both incidents would be prosecuted upon the completion of investigations.
The police have advised all Lagos residents to go about their lawful duties without any fear or apprehension, promising continued protection of everyone's fundamental human rights.
