Unknown gunmen launched a daring ambush on police patrol teams along the Abatete-Eziowelle Road in Anambra State on Wednesday, triggering a fierce gun battle that sent residents scrambling for safety. The attack occurred in Idemili North Local Government Area and involved operatives from the Department of Operations, Awka, and the Special Anti-Cultism Squad who were conducting routine surveillance in the area.

According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers arrived in a convoy consisting of three vehicles: a white Toyota Hummer bus, a black Lexus 350 SUV, and a white Toyota Highlander. All vehicles lacked identifiable registration numbers, and the assailants were reportedly dressed in military and police-style uniforms, adding confusion to the chaotic scene.
An eyewitness described the terrifying moment when the gunmen opened heavy fire on the patrol teams, prompting an immediate and fierce exchange of gunfire that lasted several minutes. The confrontation resulted in significant damage to police equipment, with a patrol bus belonging to the Special Anti-Cultism Squad set completely ablaze and a Department of Operations pickup van sustaining multiple bullet holes.

Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident in an official statement, noting that the attackers "engaged the patrol teams but were successfully repelled". Importantly, he confirmed that no civilian casualties were recorded during the violent exchange, though the incident caused widespread panic among local residents.
Following the attack, Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu has ordered immediate strengthening of security measures across Anambra State. All police divisions, formations, and patrol units have been placed on heightened alert to ensure the safety of residents.
