The Nigeria Police Force has declared a major policy shift, announcing the resumption of enforcement for its tinted glass permit system starting from the second day of January 2026. This decision comes as a direct response to escalating security challenges nationwide.
Why the Police Are Reinstating the Ban
In an official statement released on December 15 by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the police clarified the rationale behind the move. Recent security evaluations have uncovered a troubling pattern: a significant increase in criminal activities involving vehicles with illegal tinted glass.
Criminals are allegedly exploiting these darkened windows to hide their identities during serious offences like armed robbery and kidnapping. The police assert that this loophole has been used by both individual offenders and organised criminal networks to facilitate violent crimes.
Clarification on Court Proceedings and Enforcement Timeline
The Force addressed the ongoing legal context, stating clearly that no court order has prevented it from applying existing laws governing vehicle tinted glass. The matter remains before a court, but the police maintain their legal authority to enforce the regulations.
The statement explained that the previous suspension of enforcement was a voluntary act of responsibility and transparency. It was intended to give drivers sufficient time to update their paperwork and complete the official registration process without feeling rushed. That grace period will now conclude.
Full enforcement is set to recommence on Friday, January 2, 2026.
Guidance for Motorists and Assurance from the IGP
The police have advised all vehicle owners who need a tinted glass permit to submit their applications through the officially approved channels without delay. They must also ensure their vehicles meet all the stipulated legal requirements to avoid penalties.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has personally assured the Nigerian public about the conduct of the renewed enforcement drive. He promised that operations would be carried out with utmost professionalism and respect for citizens' rights, strictly in line with the law.
IGP Egbetokun reiterated the Force's unwavering commitment to public safety and the rule of law. He emphasized that this step is a proactive measure designed to protect communities and that the police will work collaboratively with all stakeholders to maintain national security.
