The Police Service Commission (PSC) has given the green light for a major career advancement for hundreds of senior police officers. This significant promotion exercise, concluded on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, saw a total of 774 officers elevated to higher ranks after undergoing a thorough selection process that included written examinations and oral interviews.
Breakdown of the Major Promotions
The commission released a detailed breakdown of the new appointments across various high-ranking positions. At the very top, one officer was promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG). Seven others are now Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIG), while thirteen have attained the position of Commissioner of Police (CP).
Beyond these top tiers, the promotion list is extensive. It includes 30 officers moving up to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), and 51 Chief Superintendents of Police (CSP) who are now Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACP). Furthermore, a large group of 542 Superintendents of Police (SP) were elevated to CSP, 119 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSP) to SP, and 12 Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP) to the rank of DSP.
Key Names in the New Leadership Lineup
In a statement issued on Thursday by the PSC’s Head of Protocol and Public Affairs, Torty Kalu, the newly promoted DIG was named as Mohammed Usman Gumel. The seven officers who earned the rank of AIG are Ihebom Chukwuma, Maxwell Olatokunbo, Abaniwonda Olufemi, Alonyenu Francis Idu, Lawal B. Ayodeji, Agene Emmanuel, and Vungmoh S. M. Kwaimo.
Among the thirteen who are now Commissioners of Police are notable figures such as Babalola Ayodeji Johnson of the NPF National Cyber Crime Centre (NCCC); Ali Umar Fage, DC DFA, Port Authority, Lagos; Cyril Uche Obiozo, DC Admin in Cross River Command; and Tabitha Bako from the Anti-Human Trafficking unit of the FCID. Others promoted to CP include Ofem Ikpi Arikpo (DCA Bayelsa Command), Edwin Ogbeghagha (DC Ops, Zone 17, Akure), and Audu Garba Bosso (DC Operations, Borno State Command).
Further Promotions Across the Ranks
The statement also provided a snapshot of promotions in other ranks. Thirty Assistant Commissioners of Police are now Deputy Commissioners. This list includes ACP Muhammad Nuhu Diggi (AC Dala Kano); ACP Udu Moses Ogechi PhD, Commander of 59 PMF, Gombe; and ACP Alex O. Ebbah, AC X-Squad in the FCT.
Fifty-one Chief Superintendents of Police have been elevated to Assistant Commissioners. Prominent among them are CSP Davidson Okechukwu Ndubueze, DPO Okija; CSP Muktari Bello from Delta State Command; and CSP Obediah Okezie, DPO World Bank in Umuahia.
Chairman's Charge and Future Commitment
The Chairman of the Commission, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), extended his congratulations to all the newly promoted officers. He charged them to justify their new ranks by demonstrating a renewed commitment to national service.
Argungu emphasized that promotion comes with higher expectations. He urged the officers to rededicate themselves to the core mandates of effective policing, which are the protection of lives and property, and the steadfast maintenance of law and order across Nigeria.
Reiterating the PSC's dedication to a transparent and rewarding system, the Chairman affirmed the Commission's resolve to sustain regular, merit-based promotions in line with global best practices for a motivated and professional police force.
