Unexploded Military Ordnance Found in Niger State

Security operatives in Niger State have successfully recovered a dangerous military device found in a local forest, averting a potential disaster.

Swift Police Action After Community Alert

The operation was launched after the Niger State Police Command received a critical report on Monday, January 5, 2026. According to the command's spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, residents of the Zugurma community in Mashegu Local Government Area had spotted a strange object resembling a missile in a nearby forest.

Acting swiftly on the tip-off, operatives from the Ibbi Division immediately moved to the scene. Their first priority was to secure the area, cordoning it off to prevent any residents from approaching the potentially lethal device.

Bomb Squad Deployed for Safe Recovery

Upon being informed, the Commissioner of Police for Niger State, CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, ordered the immediate deployment of the Command's Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) unit.

Led by CSP Mohammed Mamun, the specialized team mobilized to the location early on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at about 6:00 AM. They were guided to the exact spot by the police operatives and members of the Zugurma community who made the initial discovery.

The EOD experts carefully rendered the device safe. It was later identified as an unexploded ordnance (UXO) missile of military origin. The police took custody of the device and transported it to the State Police Headquarters in Minna for further analysis. The exact source of the missile remains unknown at this time.

Investigation Ongoing, Public Urged to Remain Calm

The police have confirmed that a detailed investigation into the incident is currently underway. Authorities have promised to keep the public updated on any new developments.

In his statement, CP Elleman appealed for calm among residents. He assured the public that all relevant security agencies are working diligently to ensure safety and restore normalcy in the area. The police also reminded citizens to always report suspicious objects to security forces immediately and never attempt to handle them.
