Hundreds of motorists were stranded for over 12 hours on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway after a massive gridlock at Kara Bridge, triggered by a seven-vehicle crash, a fallen container truck, and ongoing repair works.
Gridlock Causes and Affected Areas
The congestion brought movement around the Kara Bridge axis to a standstill, affecting commuters heading in and out of Lagos. The prolonged jam spread to major sections of the expressway, including Kara Bridge, Long Bridge, Magboro and Berger.
According to reports, a multiple-vehicle crash involving seven vehicles occurred around the Kara Bridge area, blocking movement. The situation worsened after a container-laden truck fell near the same axis, further restricting traffic flow and leaving vehicles stuck for hours.
Motorists Spend Night on Highway
Some stranded motorists reportedly spent the night on the road, while others expressed frustration over the long hours in traffic. A number of commuters resorted to driving against traffic to escape the congestion, which complicated traffic management efforts.
The gridlock was compounded by ongoing repair works on the Kara Bridge, a section of the expressway that has experienced repeated traffic challenges due to rehabilitation activities and the high volume of vehicles using the route.
Officials Deployed to Clear Road
Traffic officials, including operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), emergency responders and other relevant agencies, were deployed to the area to manage the situation, clear obstructions and restore movement.
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is one of Nigeria's busiest highways, connecting Lagos with Ogun State and serving as a major route for commuters, commercial vehicles and long-distance travellers. Authorities had previously advised motorists to plan their journeys and expect delays while the rehabilitation work continues.
