A chaotic brawl erupted at a Catholic kindergarten graduation ceremony in Toledo, Ohio, on Thursday, May 21, over seating arrangements, resulting in one woman being hospitalized and another facing criminal charges.
Incident Overview
The graduation ceremony for Queen of Apostles School Catholic kindergarten took place as planned, but tensions escalated when a family allegedly began reserving multiple rows of seats for themselves, according to witnesses who spoke with WTVG.
Jessica Anderson, 28, reportedly began yelling profanities at other parents who attempted to occupy some of the seats she was accused of hoarding. Craig Mays, a parent of a graduating student, attempted to intervene and calm Anderson down. However, he told the outlet that he barely managed to utter a few words before being attacked by Anderson's family.
Violence Unfolds
“As I’m arguing with Jessica, I literally don’t remember anything, I just know I was sucker-punched,” Mays said. He stated that five men from Anderson’s extended family jumped from their seats and assaulted him. Video footage from the scene depicted several individuals striking a man lying on the ground while others attempted to separate the combatants.
When Mays’ ex-partner stepped in to help, Anderson allegedly grabbed her by the hair and dragged her away, as captured on video by horrified onlookers. The two women engaged in a separate fight, each pulling the other’s hair and repeatedly striking their heads. According to the video, Mays’ former partner appeared to have her face slammed into a metal chair before Anderson pushed her away from the larger altercation.
Aftermath and Charges
The woman was later taken to the hospital and required stitches, according to an affidavit obtained by WTOL 11. Anderson was arrested and charged with felonious assault. Meanwhile, the children were rehearsing for their highly anticipated graduation ceremony in a separate room when the brawl broke out. The school assured that all students remained safe and continued with their end-of-year celebrations as usual.
