A Lagos-based cleric has issued a stern call to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and security chiefs to intervene immediately in the escalating political violence in Osun State, warning that the bloodshed must stop before the upcoming governorship election. Prophet Oladele Israel Ogundipe, founder of Genesis Global parish, condemned the killings in Osogbo, Esa Oke, and surrounding communities, describing the situation as an affront to humanity.
Prophet Ogundipe Condemns Killings
In a telephone interview with journalists, Prophet Ogundipe expressed deep concern over the wave of unrest that has gripped the state weeks before the August 15, 2026 poll. He noted that the violence has already claimed lives and threatened the peace for which Osun has long been known.
"Elections will come and go, but human life remains sacred," he said. "Why should anyone resort to violence and bloodshed for political gain? This is not the first election in Osun State, nor will it be the last. No political ambition is worth the life of any citizen."
Divine Accountability Warning
The cleric drew on the biblical story of Cain and Abel to warn that those orchestrating or executing political violence would face divine judgment. He stressed that no individual has the right to take another's life, regardless of the political stakes.
Prophet Ogundipe challenged the reasoning of politicians and their supporters who pursue electoral victory at the expense of human life, questioning the moral foundation of such ambitions.
Appeal to Tinubu and Security Chiefs
Prophet Ogundipe directed his appeal to the highest levels of government, urging President Tinubu, the Inspector-General of Police, and other security chiefs to immediately clamp down on political thugs and ensure peace across Osun State before voting day.
He reminded stakeholders of Osun's long-standing reputation as a peaceful state, expressing hope that the tradition would be upheld. He also offered prayers for national unity, stability, and the safety of ordinary citizens caught in the political crossfire.
Context and Prior Statements
The cleric's remarks come amid heightened tensions in the state, with reports of violence in key communities. Earlier, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is on course to secure victory in Nigeria's 2027 presidential election, speaking during the 103rd National Executive Committee meeting of a faction of the party in Abuja.
Prophet Ogundipe's call adds to the growing chorus of voices demanding action to prevent further bloodshed in Osun State.
