Cuba has released its official visa exemption policy, identifying the countries whose citizens can enter the Caribbean island without a tourist card or visa for short-term stays. Among the list, only two African nations are included: Kenya and Namibia.
Kenya and Namibia: The Only African Countries on Cuba's Visa-Free List
Kenya stands out as the only African country granted the longest visa-free stay of 90 days. This places Kenya in the same exemption bracket as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Malaysia, Montenegro, Russia, and Serbia. Kenyan travelers can visit Cuba for up to three months without applying for a tourist card in advance.
Namibia also appears on the list, but under a distinct arrangement. Namibian citizens are exempt from the tourist visa requirement, but the policy does not specify a fixed maximum duration for their stay. This unique condition sets Namibia apart from every other country listed.
Exemption Periods and Eligible Countries
The policy divides eligible countries into groups based on the allowed length of stay. The 90-day bracket includes Kenya alongside the aforementioned nations. A 60-day bracket covers Grenada and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The 30-day bracket includes Antigua and Barbuda, Belarus, Mongolia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Singapore. The 28-day bracket covers Barbados and Dominica.
No other African country features in any exemption category. Countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, and Egypt are absent from the list, meaning their citizens must go through the standard tourist card or visa application process before traveling to Cuba.
Implications for Other African Travelers
For the vast majority of African travelers, a tourist card or visa remains a prerequisite for entering Cuba. The exemption is strictly for short-term tourism, not extended stays or other purposes. According to the policy, travelers from non-exempt countries must apply through Cuban consulates or authorized agencies before departure.
