The Oyo State Police Command has reported a tragic incident involving a wild elephant that invaded the Innayin community on Thursday, April 23. The attack resulted in the death of one resident and left another missing.
Details of the Incident
According to a post on X (formerly Twitter), the incident occurred around 3:30 pm. Officers, alongside local vigilantes and hunters, responded to a distress call from residents. Upon arrival, they discovered the body of 45-year-old Ibrahim Tijani in a nearby bush. The police stated that his injuries were consistent with an animal attack. His remains were taken to the General Hospital in Iwere-Ile.
Another resident, 50-year-old Alhaji Muhammadu Bingin, remains missing after encountering the same animal during the incident. Search operations are ongoing to locate him.
Security Measures and Advice
The police have advised residents to stay away from the affected area and report any sightings of the elephant to security agencies immediately. The National Park Service and other wildlife authorities have been contacted to safely manage the situation.
The Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, urged residents to remain calm and assured them that officers are working with other agencies to secure the area and prevent further danger. He thanked the community for their cooperation and asked for continued support as efforts continue.
Recent Incidents in Oyo State
This incident follows a previous attack in which five National Park Service operatives were killed in Oloka, Orire Local Government Area. Gunmen stormed their post around 9 pm, shooting and burning some officers. One victim was found dead on a prayer mat. Community members expressed shock and cited rising insecurity linked to nearby forest settlements.
In another event, gunfire erupted in Ikoyi-Ile during tensions related to a planned visit by the Soun of Ogbomoso. Several residents were injured, and the monarch later postponed the visit due to security concerns.
The police continue to urge vigilance and cooperation from the public to ensure safety.
