President Emmanuel Macron has declared that the hantavirus situation linked to an outbreak on a cruise ship is now under control, following international concern after multiple deaths aboard the MV Hondius. Speaking at a press conference in Nairobi on Tuesday, May 12, Macron emphasized that French authorities had implemented extremely rigorous protocols based on expert medical advice.
Government Response and Coordination
Macron called for close collaboration between European nations and the World Health Organization to manage the outbreak effectively. He stated, "The situation is under control under its authority, thanks to our healthcare workers." The president urged continued mobilization, vigilance, and high standards while cautioning against comparisons to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hantavirus vs. COVID-19
According to Macron, hantavirus is a known virus and differs significantly from the pathogen responsible for the global coronavirus pandemic. The outbreak was detected on the MV Hondius, where three people reportedly died after contracting the virus, which is typically spread through contact with infected rodents.
Current Patient Status
French health officials confirmed that one woman who tested positive for the virus remains hospitalized in intensive care but is in stable condition. Earlier, French Health Minister Stephanie Rist stated there was no evidence of widespread circulation of the Andes strain of hantavirus in France. She noted that this strain is particularly concerning because it can spread between humans and currently has no approved vaccine or treatment.
