Rising Insecurity in Northern Nigeria

Banditry has plagued northern Nigeria for several years, resulting in hundreds of deaths. The federal government maintains that terrorists are being contained, despite persistent attacks. Bandits—armed outlaws operating in gangs across remote areas—have also expanded operations into Nigeria's southwest, where they engage in kidnap-for-ransom activities targeting communities and travelers.

Tuesday's deadly blast in Niger state comes amid a surge in violence across north-central Nigeria since April, with the death toll rising to at least 40 people. In a separate incident, assailants killed six people in attacks on communities in Barkin Ladi and Riyom LGAs of Plateau state.

Plateau State Attacks

Rwang Tengwong, spokesperson of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), confirmed the Plateau attacks to journalists on Monday, July 6, stating that the fatal assaults occurred between Saturday, July 4, and Sunday, July 5. According to The Sun, Tengwong described the killings as unprovoked and called on security agencies to end the recurring attacks on communities in the state.

President Tinubu's Stance on Insecurity

In related news, President Bola Tinubu has emphasized interfaith dialogue as the only path to addressing Nigeria's challenges. According to a statement by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu made this remark while receiving Archbishop Paul Gallagher, secretary for relations with States and International Organisations of the Holy See, at his residence in Abuja. The president reaffirmed his administration's commitment to promoting peace, harmony, and tolerance among Nigeria’s diverse religious communities.
