Namibia Clarifies Work Rules for Tourists
The Namibian government has issued a clear reminder to international visitors: tourists holding a holiday or tourist visa are strictly prohibited from engaging in any form of employment while in the country. This announcement was published on Namibia's official tourism website as part of updated travel guidelines for foreign nationals.
According to the authorities, any visitor who wishes to work in Namibia must first obtain an appropriate employment permit from their country of residence before travelling. The same requirement applies to those intending to study in Namibia—they must secure a valid study permit prior to arrival.
Official Statement on Permits
The government's website states: "If visitors to Namibia have a tourist/holiday visa, they cannot engage in any employment while in the country. Should they wish to do so, they should apply for an employment permit in their country of residence before entry. The same applies to study permits."
This clarification aims to prevent misunderstandings and ensure that all foreign nationals comply with Namibian immigration laws. The government emphasized that entering on a tourist visa does not grant any work or study rights.
Communication Tips for Travelers
In addition to the employment rule, Namibia provided guidance on communication services for visitors. Travelers can access the GSM network in all towns and on most national highways. International roaming agreements are in place with 146 countries through 334 network partners.
Most accommodation establishments offer Wi-Fi to guests. For self-drive travellers heading to remote areas, renting a satellite phone is recommended. When dialling internationally from Namibia, use + followed by the country code, area code, and number. Namibia's country code is 264.
Mobile Network Providers
MTC and TN Mobile are Namibia's leading cell phone operators. Travellers can purchase starter packs and data bundles to communicate with local numbers. Additional data is easily available across the country.
Visa-on-Arrival for African Countries
Previously, Namibia's Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security (MHAISS) released an updated list of 28 African countries eligible for visa-on-arrival. However, 13 African countries were removed from the scheme, meaning their ordinary passport holders must obtain a visa before travelling to Namibia.
