The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has published a comprehensive list of 23 visa classes available to foreign nationals seeking entry into the country. These visas fall under two main application channels: traditional embassy processing and the digital e-Visa platform.
Short Visit Visas are designed for stays not exceeding 90 days and cover purposes such as tourism, business meetings, conferences, academic exchanges, sports, entertainment, and humanitarian work. A critical distinction is that while some embassy-issued visas allow extensions, all e-Visa classes are strictly non-extendable once in Nigeria.
Embassy-Processed Short Visit Visas
These visas require application at a Nigerian embassy, high commission, or consulate before travel. They include:
- Diplomatic Visa (Non-accredited) – For non-accredited diplomats on official short-term business. Requires a diplomatic passport and Note Verbale. Permits up to 90 days but no employment or extension.
- Transit Without Visa (TWOV) – For airside transit up to 48 hours with an onward ticket. Does not grant entry past border control.
- Visiting Visa – Multiple Entry – For regular social visits, valid up to five years with stays up to 180 days per entry. Requires invitation letter, host's legal status proof, bank statements, and return flight.
- Journalist Visa – For international media coverage. Requires official media accreditation and security clearances.
- Cleric Visa – For religious officials conducting services or conferences. Valid up to 90 days but stay capped at 30 days. Requires invitation from a Nigerian religious institution.
