Operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State have taken 39 motorists into custody for exceeding speed limits. This crackdown is a strategic move to curb road accidents during the ongoing Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Special Patrol Targets Speedsters
The State Corps Commander, Akinwunmi Fasakin, personally led a special intervention patrol along the busy Sagamu-Abeokuta road on Tuesday, 16th, and Wednesday, 17th of December, 2025. He stated that the command launched this initiative to realize a 10% reduction in road traffic fatalities and injuries throughout the yuletide season.
In a statement released to journalists in Abeokuta on Thursday, Commander Fasakin revealed that a Laser Radar Gun was deployed to identify vehicles moving at dangerous speeds. The operation was a direct response to directives from the FRSC National Headquarters for commands to develop local solutions to minimize crashes before, during, and after the festive period.
Enforcement and Enlightenment Measures
Drivers caught during the two-day exercise were not just penalized; they were also booked for mandatory road safety enlightenment sessions. Furthermore, commercial vehicle operators among the offenders were instructed to install speed-limiting devices in their vehicles immediately.
A total of 16 drivers were apprehended on Tuesday, while another 23 were nabbed on Wednesday for various speeding offences. Commander Fasakin used the opportunity to advise all motorists to drive with caution, avoid speeding, and refrain from overloading their vehicles to ensure safer roads during this period.
Separate Tanker Incident in Sagamu
In a related development, a road crash occurred in the Isale-Oko, Sagamu area of the state. A petrol tanker, with registration number KTU-424, lost control and crashed into a drainage around RSS Junction.
Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), confirmed the incident on Thursday. He reported that the driver sustained minor head injuries and was subsequently taken to Ore-Ofe Hospital in Sagamu for medical treatment.
The FRSC continues to emphasize that adherence to speed limits and other traffic regulations is non-negotiable for the safety of all road users, especially during high-traffic festive seasons.
