Seven individuals sustained various injuries in a serious road accident on the ever-busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Christmas Eve. The incident, which involved a Toyota bus, occurred around the Eledumare area in Ogun State.
Details of the Christmas Eve Crash
The accident was confirmed by the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi. According to his statement issued in Abeokuta on Thursday, December 25, 2025, the crash was caused by a tyre burst while the vehicle was in motion.
The bus, whose registration number was not immediately known, veered off the road following the tyre failure. It subsequently somersaulted into a nearby bush. Operatives from both TRACE and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were promptly dispatched to the scene to carry out rescue operations.
Rescue and Aftermath
The injured victims received immediate attention at the scene before being transported to Victory Hospital for further medical treatment. Thankfully, the rescue operation was conducted efficiently and did not cause significant traffic disruption on the expressway.
The accident vehicle has been towed to the Police Station in Isara-Remo for a more detailed investigation, as stated by the TRACE Public Relations Officer.
Separate Fatal Tanker Explosion in Lagos
In a separate and tragic incident, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) reported a fatal tanker explosion earlier on Thursday. The accident involved a Mack Truck carrying diesel and occurred at the Oto-Ijanikin axis, near the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), inward Agbara along the Badagry Expressway.
Preliminary security investigations suggest that excessive speed was the primary cause. The tanker driver reportedly lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle. The truck then crashed and erupted into a massive fire, tragically killing both the driver and an adult female passenger.
LASTMA personnel on the corridor quickly secured the area, cordoned off the expressway, and alerted emergency services including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (Ojo Unit), FRSC, and the Ijanikin Police Division. Their swift action prevented members of the public from attempting to scoop the spilled diesel, averting a potential secondary disaster.
After the fire was contained, LASTMA evacuated the burnt tanker to clear the road, while the FRSC handled the removal of the victims' remains.
