The Federal Government has raised alarm over increasing cases of vandalism and misuse of newly constructed and ongoing road projects nationwide, warning that these irresponsible acts are threatening the lifespan and safety of critical national infrastructure.
Minister's Inspection and Warning
Hon. Bello Muhammad Goronyo, Minister of State for Works, issued this stern warning on Saturday, November 8, 2025, during a comprehensive inspection visit to the outstanding sections of the strategic Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Expressway project.
The Minister specifically condemned the destructive activities of hoodlums along both completed and active sections of the highway, highlighting particularly disturbing incidents around the Jaji Bridge corridor in Kaduna State.
"Maintenance begins with discipline and public responsibility," Goronyo declared. "We have observed people cutting through newly completed road sections or tampering with vital components. These acts of vandalism must stop immediately."
Project Progress and Technical Details
Despite these challenges, the Minister reaffirmed the government's determination to complete the Abuja-Kano Expressway within record time, describing it as a flagship project of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.
Goronyo disclosed that Section I (Abuja-Kaduna) spanning 144 kilometers is progressing steadily across multiple active sections including Tungan Maje, Jere, Katari, Kakau, Gonigora, and Agogo Junction.
Significant work has already been completed with approximately 26 kilometers of continuous rigid concrete pavement and 15 kilometers of binder and wearing course finished.
Engr. Musa Sa'idu, Acting Director of Highways, Bridges and Design at the Ministry, explained that the project design was upgraded from flexible asphalt to rigid concrete pavement capable of lasting about a century and withstanding heavy-duty vehicles.
Government and Contractor Commitment
The Minister emphasized that President Tinubu has ensured funding will not be a constraint, telling the contractor, Messrs. Infiouest International Limited, that "it is now a matter of work and getting paid."
Mr. Robert Turner, Senior Project Manager of the company, reaffirmed their commitment to engineering excellence, noting that work is progressing seven days a week with plans to introduce night shifts to accelerate completion.
"We are determined to deliver this project ahead of schedule. The government has demonstrated exceptional consistency in funding, and we are matching that commitment with performance," Turner assured.
Goronyo concluded by urging traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents to take collective ownership of public infrastructure, emphasizing that every Nigerian must play a part in protecting this vital national asset designed to enhance trade, promote unity, and strengthen economic integration between Northern and Southern Nigeria.
