The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has officially identified the primary factors behind the serious road crash involving world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua. The incident occurred on the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
Timeline and Location of the Tragic Event
The accident took place around 12 noon on Monday, 29 December 2025. The specific location was the Sinoma area, close to Sagamu in Ogun State. According to the FRSC's statement released on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, @FRSCNigeria, the collision involved a Lexus Jeep carrying Anthony Joshua and a stationary truck that was properly parked by the roadside.
Official Findings on the Crash Cause
Preliminary investigation by the road safety corps points to two critical traffic violations. The Lexus Jeep was suspected to be travelling beyond the legal speed limit for that section of the expressway. As the driver attempted an overtaking manoeuvre, he lost control of the vehicle, which then veered off and crashed into the parked truck.
"Preliminary findings indicate that the Lexus Jeep, which was suspected to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit on the corridor, lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre and crashed into a stationary truck," the FRSC report summarized.
Casualty Figures and Emergency Response
The crash resulted in tragic fatalities and injuries. Two persons lost their lives in the collision. One other individual sustained injuries and was promptly taken to a hospital for medical treatment. Fortunately, two people escaped without any physical harm.
Anthony Joshua, the most prominent figure involved, was successfully rescued from the wreckage. The boxing icon sustained only minor injuries and is alive. The remains of the deceased victims were transported to the Livewell Morgue in Ajaka, Sagamu.
This incident has once again highlighted the dangers of speeding and dangerous overtaking on Nigerian highways, even for high-profile individuals. The FRSC continues to advocate for strict adherence to road traffic regulations to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
