A devastating chain-reaction collision involving eleven vehicles on the busy Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway has resulted in the loss of two lives, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The multiple-vehicle accident occurred on Wednesday, 4 December 2025, at approximately 11:45 a.m. The crash site was located within the New Garki axis of the expressway in Enugu State. According to Franklin Agbakoba, the Sector Commander of the FRSC Enugu State Command, the pile-up involved a total of 30 people – 26 males and four females.
Agbakoba provided a breakdown of the vehicles involved in the collision:
- Four trucks
- Two trailers
- One Sienna
- One tipper
- One Hiace bus
- One mini-bus
- One Jeep
Rescue and Emergency Response
Officials from the FRSC's Ozalla Unit Command, stationed along the route, were the first to arrive at the scene and immediately commenced rescue operations. Their efforts were quickly bolstered by personnel from other nearby FRSC units and other security agencies.
The injured victims, nine males, were transported for medical care using the FRSC Zebra 32 Ambulance team. They were taken to two major hospitals: the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu, and the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) in Ozalla.
The coordinated rescue operation was led by a joint team including the FRSC Unit Commander from Ozalla, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ozalla, and military personnel. After the victims were evacuated, teams from the FRSC and the Enugu State Traffic Management Authority (ESTMA) worked to clear the wreckage and obstructions from the expressway using tow trucks.
Causes and Official Statement
Sector Commander Agbakoba identified the primary causative factors that led to the catastrophic series of crashes. He cited Speed Violation (SPV), Route Violation (RTV), and Loss of Control (LOC) as the main contributors to the accident.
The commander spoke to newsmen in Enugu on Wednesday evening, following the conclusion of the initial rescue and clearance phases. He praised the swift response of the emergency teams, which helped prevent a higher casualty count despite the scale of the collision.
This tragic event underscores the persistent dangers on one of Nigeria's major highways and highlights the critical importance of adhering to traffic regulations, especially concerning speed and proper lane discipline.
