A tragic road accident has claimed the lives of nine individuals in Gombe State after a speeding trailer lost control and collided with a passenger bus.
Details of the Fatal Collision
The crash occurred on Monday, December 22, 2025, at approximately 8:33 a.m. along the Kaltungo-Cham Road. The incident took place within the Kaluwa community, situated in the Kaltungo Local Government Area of Gombe State.
Samson Kaura, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Gombe State, provided official confirmation of the event in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria. He reported that the accident involved a trailer and a Sharon model bus.
Casualty Figures and Emergency Response
According to the FRSC commander, a total of eighteen persons were involved in the devastating crash. The final toll was grievous:
- Nine people lost their lives.
- Five victims sustained injuries of varying severity.
- Four other individuals managed to escape without any physical hurt.
All those affected were swiftly transported to the General Hospital in Kaltungo. The injured received urgent medical treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were placed in the hospital's mortuary.
Cause of Accident and FRSC Warning
Preliminary investigation by the FRSC points to two primary factors: excessive speed and brake failure. Commander Kaura explained that the trailer was moving at a high velocity on a sloping section of the road.
"The trailer was speeding on a sloping road and, as a result, lost control and hit the Sharon bus from behind, which caused the bus to somersault," Kaura stated.
He used this tragic event to issue a stern warning to all motorists. The FRSC consistently advises drivers to avoid high speeds, particularly on roads with challenging topography like slopes. Traveling at a controllable speed is essential to prevent such catastrophic losses of life and property.
The Sector Commander also emphasized the importance of vehicle maintenance, especially during the busy yuletide travel period. He urged all drivers to conduct thorough inspections of their vehicles, including brakes and tires, before embarking on any journey.
