The Ogun State House of Assembly has issued a firm directive to the State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) to immediately tackle the chaotic and indiscriminate parking of vehicles under the Kuto Flyover in Abeokuta.
Assembly Acts on Traffic Menace During Budget Defence
The order was given on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, by the House Committee on Finance and Appropriations. The committee was engaging with the State Ministry of Transportation during the ongoing 2026 budget defence session at the Assembly Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The Chairman of the committee, Honourable Musefiu Lamidi, explicitly tasked TRACE with enforcing traffic laws and restoring order around the Kuto Roundabout. He stressed that this action is crucial for enhancing public safety and ensuring smooth traffic flow in the busy area.
Lamidi expressed deep concern over the traffic lawlessness observed under the flyover. He identified the primary causes of the persistent gridlock as vehicles driving against traffic (one-way), uncontrolled picking and dropping of passengers, and the unauthorized loading and offloading of goods by commercial vehicles.
Transportation Ministry Unveils Ambitious Plans
While defending his ministry's budget proposals before the committee, the State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Olugbenga Dairo, disclosed significant future plans. He revealed that aside from the existing partnership with ValueJet Airline, the state government is making arrangements to establish its own state-owned airline.
Dairo provided further assurances, stating that from the next fiscal year, the state would begin cargo flight operations. Furthermore, plans are in motion to situate an aircraft maintenance and repair facility at the Gateway International Airport.
The committee also charged the Ministry to ensure the development of the Gateway Airport aligns with the state's broader economic agenda. The goal is to guarantee the project fulfills its mandate of boosting investment, improving connectivity, and increasing revenue generation for Ogun State.
Modern Terminals and Agency Heads Present
In a related development, Commissioner Dairo, speaking earlier at his office, unveiled plans to transform Abeokuta into a 'future city.' He announced that modern bus terminals have been programmed for the capital city next year to enhance transport service delivery.
He described the project as a Federal Government initiative aimed at consolidating transport activities in state capitals. "We are working with the Federal Government to create new multi-dimensional modern bus terminals, similar to what exists in Lagos State," Dairo added.
Heads of agencies under the Ministry who appeared before the House Committee to defend their budgets included:
- TRACE, led by its Acting Commander, Mr. Elias Omonayajo.
- Gateway Airport, headed by Mr. Dapo Olumide.
- The Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), led by Mr. Ademeyin Olugboyega.
The Assembly's directive to TRACE underscores the government's immediate priority to solve pressing urban traffic challenges, even as it pursues long-term, transformative projects in the transportation sector.
