Oyo Government Orders Street Vendors Off Walkways, Threatens Penalties
Oyo cracks down on street vendors occupying walkways

The Oyo State Government has issued a stern directive to traders, artisans, motor dealers, and street vendors who are conducting their businesses on pedestrian walkways and roadside spaces. They have been ordered to vacate these areas immediately or face legal penalties.

Clear Directive from OYRTMA

Major Adesagba Adekoya (Rtd), the Chairman of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), made the announcement at the Authority's secretariat in Ibadan. He stated unequivocally that using walkways for commercial purposes is illegal. He explained that this practice creates serious problems, including traffic bottlenecks, accidents, and significant inconvenience for shoppers.

Adekoya identified several key locations where this illegal trading is rampant. These hotspots include the University of Ibadan (U.I.) area, Samonda, and Mokola. The government is insisting that all affected traders relocate to officially designated market spaces without delay, a move considered especially critical during the busy festive period.

Consequences for Non-Compliance

The OYRTMA Chairman issued a clear warning to those who refuse to comply. He stated that non-compliance will result in fines and appearances in court. The Oyo State Government has publicly commended OYRTMA for its efforts to enhance road safety and public order. The government also reiterated its broader commitment to upgrading the state's infrastructure and ensuring the safe movement of people and goods across Oyo State.

Olubadan Foresees Economic Transformation for Ibadan

In a separate but related development, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Senator Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, expressed optimism about the city's economic future. Speaking on Thursday, the monarch assured that Ibadan is on the brink of a swift and positive economic transformation.

Oba Ladoja gave this assurance when he received a courtesy visit from the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods Association of Oyo State (FMCG) at the Olubadan Palace in Oke Aremo, Ibadan. The Olubadan emphasized that for maximum economic gains and job creation, it is more profitable to focus on manufacturing rather than just distribution.

To tackle the challenges facing local industries, such as issues with electricity, water, and roads, the Olubadan revealed that the Olubadan In-Council has established an Economic and Investment Committee. This committee is tasked with directly addressing these obstacles to growth.

During the event, Alhaja Apeke Tunrayo Adeogun, the originator of the FMCG's Oyo State branch, congratulated Oba Ladoja on his ascension to the throne. She also pledged the association's full support for the economic development and progress of Ibadanland.

The occasion was further graced by a solidarity visit from the management of JAIZ Bank PLC, Ibadan branch. The Group Head, Mr. Ismail Arowolo, pledged the bank's support for the rapid economic development of Ibadan city, as well as for corporate bodies and individuals within the community.

The event was attended by several high-ranking dignitaries, including Oba Salawudeen Amidu Ajibade (Ashipa Olubadan), Oba Abiodun Azees (Ashipa Balogun), Oba Akeem Mobolaji Adewoyin (Ekerin Balogun), Mogaji Jelil Adepoju, and Alhaji Aare Dawud Makanjuola Akinola De-damak (the Aare Musulumi of Ibadanland).
