A major fire incident involving a truck transporting raw materials sent panic through the ancient town of Kishi in Oke Ogun, Oyo State, on Wednesday night, leaving one person hospitalised with injuries.
Swift Response by Firefighters Prevents Disaster
The Oyo State Fire Services Agency (OYSFA) confirmed that its operatives were swiftly deployed to the scene along a major route in Kishi after receiving a distress call. According to the agency's Chairman, Mr. Maroof Akinwande, the Volvo truck, whose registration number was not immediately known, was already fully engulfed in fierce flames upon their arrival.
"Our firemen swiftly got into action, launched an articulated attack and displayed professional technical know-how to rescue a male person trapped in the vehicle," Akinwande stated. The victim was successfully pulled from the inferno alive and rushed to a nearby hospital in Kishi for urgent medical attention.
Cause of the Inferno and Eyewitness Accounts
Preliminary investigation points to sparks from the truck's engine compartment as the likely cause of the blaze while the vehicle was in motion. The highly flammable nature of the rubber cargo caused the fire to spread rapidly, overwhelming initial attempts by the driver and other road users to extinguish it using fire extinguishers and buckets of water.
Eyewitnesses reported that thick smoke and raging flames completely consumed the vehicle, causing temporary traffic chaos. Security personnel cordoned off the area to allow emergency responders to work, while frightened residents and shop owners evacuated their premises for fear of the fire spreading.

Mr. Akinwande praised his team's bravery and used the opportunity to issue a stern warning to vehicle owners. "Vehicle owners and drivers must ensure regular servicing of their trucks. Most fire incidents on highways are caused by mechanical faults and poor maintenance," he emphasised.
He further urged the public to alert the fire service immediately during any emergency, as early reporting is crucial to minimising casualties and property loss. The incident has once again highlighted the grave dangers posed by poorly maintained vehicles, especially those hauling combustible goods, on Nigerian roads.
While the fire completely destroyed the truck and its contents, the swift action of the Oyo State Fire Service was credited with saving nearby buildings and properties from imminent damage. As of the latest update, the injured victim was responding to treatment in the hospital, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
