Two dead, three rescued in Lagos auto crash

A tragic road accident in the Meiran area of Lagos State has resulted in the death of two individuals, with three others sustaining severe injuries. The crash occurred at Iyana Meiran, inward Meiran Road by the Primary Health Centre (PHC).

Details of the Collision

The incident, which happened on 18 December 2025, was caused by a Silo Mixer truck whose brakes failed while it was travelling at high speed. The out-of-control truck collided with an eight-seater commercial mini-bus, popularly known as a Korope, bearing registration number EPP 541 YF. It also rammed into four tricycles marked KTU 360 QN, LND 444 QL, LSR 444 QN, and EKY 122 QP.

The force of the impact left the vehicles mangled, trapping several commuters inside the wreckage. The driver of the truck reportedly fled the scene immediately after realizing the severity of the crash.

Rescue and Emergency Response

Personnel from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) were quickly mobilised to the accident scene. With the crucial assistance of public-spirited passers-by, they worked to extricate the trapped victims. Three severely injured persons were successfully rescued from the crushed vehicles.

Security operatives from the Meiran Police Division provided reinforcement throughout the rescue and recovery operations. The authority cordoned off the entire corridor and implemented comprehensive traffic control and diversion measures to manage the aftermath.

Aftermath and Official Statement

All injured victims were rushed to Mobonke Hospital on Meiran Road for intensive medical care. The remains of the two deceased were formally handed over to the Nigeria Police, who arranged for their conveyance via an ambulance.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy and full recovery. He reiterated the agency's commitment to preserving lives and property on Lagos roads.

Bakare-Oki used the opportunity to re-emphasise the critical obligation of all motorists, especially operators of heavy-duty and articulated vehicles. He stated that they must ensure their brake systems and other vital mechanical components are thoroughly inspected and certified roadworthy before any journey.

He further admonished drivers to adhere strictly to government-regulated speed limits. The LASTMA boss stressed that mechanical negligence and excessive speeding remain persistent and avoidable causes of fatal road crashes in the state.
