Vietnamese customs authorities have arrested a Nigerian national, Izuchukwu Calistus Odionye, in connection with a transnational drug trafficking case involving drugs smuggled from Laos into Vietnam. The arrest followed the seizure of 2kg of suspected crystal methamphetamine and two suspected heroin bricks concealed in a consignment, according to a statement released on Monday, August 17, 2026.
Discovery at Lao Bao International Border Gate
The case was uncovered at the Lao Bao International Border Gate in the central province of Quang Tri, as announced by the customs control team under the Customs Sub-Department of Region IX. At 8:30 pm on August 5, customs officers were inspecting road vehicles entering Vietnam from Laos through the border gate when scanning equipment detected suspicious images in a consigned package.
A physical inspection revealed that the drugs were concealed inside electric water heaters and electronic components, which were used as disguises. The discovery prompted authorities to suspect the involvement of transnational drug trafficking networks.
Investigation and Arrest in Ho Chi Minh City
The Customs Sub-Department of Region IX assigned its customs control team to lead the investigation and coordinate with multiple agencies, including the Lao Bao International Border Gate’s customs branch, the drug-related crimes investigation police division under the Quang Tri Police, the anti-smuggling investigation sub-department, and the provincial Border Guard. Their objective was to identify and locate the recipient of the consignment.
After several days of tracing the package across multiple locations, law enforcement officers arrested Izuchukwu Calistus Odionye, a Nigerian national born in 1983, on August 9. The arrest took place in Ho Chi Minh City while Odionye was allegedly receiving a package containing the drugs.
Suspect Admits Role, Investigation Expands
According to the police, Odionye admitted that the package contained drugs and stated that he had been hired to receive it in Ho Chi Minh City and transport it to Hanoi. The investigation has been expanded to identify other individuals involved in the trafficking operation.
