Security forces in Plateau State have launched a manhunt for suspected Fulani bandits who ambushed and killed a woman in Batok 2 Village, Riyom Local Government Area. The victim, identified as Mrs Helen John, was attacked near her residence on the evening of August 28, 2026.
Troops Respond to Sporadic Shooting
According to security analyst Zagazola Makana, the incident occurred at about 2100 hours when troops of Sector 6, Operation ENDURING PEACE, received reports of sporadic shooting in the community. The troops moved to the area and conducted a search of the general vicinity, where they discovered the corpse of the native woman.
Preliminary investigation indicated that the assailants allegedly laid an ambush and concealed themselves in a maize farm close to the victim’s residence before attacking her while she was engaged in household chores. The circumstances surrounding the attack are still being investigated.
Corpse Handed to Community Leaders
The corpse was subsequently handed over to community leaders for further action. Security forces have commenced efforts to track down and arrest the assailants, while patrols and surveillance have been intensified around the community and adjoining areas.
The attack adds to concerns about insecurity in Plateau State, where communal and criminal violence has periodically disrupted lives. The military operation, which is part of broader efforts to restore peace in the region, continues its presence in the area.
Authorities have not yet confirmed any arrests, and the investigation remains active. The intensified patrols aim to prevent further incidents and reassure residents of the community.
