Bayelsa Vigilante Apprehends Two Suspected Tricycle Pickpockets in Yenagoa
The Bayelsa State Vigilante Security Service has successfully apprehended two young suspects, Emmanuel Oweibena and Charles Francis, both aged 21, for their alleged involvement in a sophisticated tricycle-based robbery syndicate operating within Yenagoa, the state capital.
Arrest Following Intelligence and Surveillance
The suspects were captured on Monday, March 2, 2026, at the busy Tombia–Etegwe Roundabout. This operation was the result of credible intelligence gathered by the vigilante service, combined with sustained surveillance efforts over a period of time.
Modus Operandi of the Syndicate
According to reports, the duo operated in a coordinated manner:
- One suspect would drive the tricycle, posing as a legitimate commercial operator.
- The other would target unsuspecting commuters, stealthily stealing mobile phones, cash, and other valuable items during rides.
Their criminal activities came to light after a victim, who was robbed along the Melford Okilo Expressway last year, provided crucial information that helped identify the suspects.
Confession and Handover to Police
During interrogation, both Emmanuel Oweibena and Charles Francis confessed to having engaged in these criminal activities for several years. Following their arrest and initial questioning, the vigilante service has formally handed them over to the Nigerian Police Force for further investigation and subsequent prosecution.
Vigilante Chairman's Statement on Community Safety
Hon. Doubiye Alagba, Chairman of the Bayelsa State Vigilante Security Service, emphasized the organization's unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of local communities. He urged residents to remain vigilant at all times and to promptly report any suspicious activities or individuals to the appropriate authorities.
This incident highlights the ongoing efforts by community-based security groups to combat crime and protect citizens in Bayelsa State.
