A football supercomputer has issued its forecast for the 2026 UEFA Champions League final, backing Arsenal to overcome Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest on May 30.
Opta's latest predictions were released after the two finalists were confirmed on Wednesday, May 6. Paris Saint-Germain secured their place with a dramatic 6-5 aggregate victory over Bayern Munich, while Arsenal defeated Atletico Madrid 2-1 on aggregate.
PSG's Path to the Final
The French champions held Bayern Munich to a 1-1 draw in the second leg at the Allianz Arena, following a thrilling 5-4 win in Paris the previous week. Ousmane Dembele gave PSG an early lead in the third minute, connecting with Khvicha Kvaratshelia after a brilliant run down the left flank. Harry Kane equalized for Bayern in the 90+4 minute, but it was not enough to force extra time. Bayern had also appealed for a penalty in the first half when Vitinha's shot struck Joao Neves' arm, but the referee rejected the claims.
Arsenal's Route to Budapest
The Gunners clinched their spot in the final after a 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid in the second leg at the Emirates Stadium. Bukayo Saka scored the decisive goal in the 44th minute, ensuring a 2-1 aggregate win. This will be Arsenal's first Champions League final appearance in 20 years.
Supercomputer's Verdict
According to Opta's supercomputer, Arsenal have a 55.76% chance of lifting the trophy, while PSG's chances of successfully defending their title stand at 44.24%. The final will also be a rematch of last season's semi-final, where PSG eliminated Arsenal 3-1 on aggregate.
Player Reactions
PSG midfielder Joao Neves expressed pride in reaching another final, stating, "It's always great to get to another final. We're very proud of our journey and what we've done here. I think it's a time to celebrate. Playing against Bayern is always difficult; they're a great team. We know how to battle through."
French international Desire Doue highlighted the key to PSG's success: "We don't change our approach; we don't change the things we're used to doing. The coach asks us to press, to attack, defend to give it everything and run for each other. That's how you go about winning trophies. We all fought for one another, and that's our strength."
Earlier, Bukayo Saka hinted at who Arsenal wanted to face in the final, initially giving a media-trained response before revealing his preference. The England international's comments have added to the anticipation ahead of the clash.
