Edo State Governor Monday Okphebolo has been commended for fostering an environment that enabled the successful staging of the 11th World Athletics Gold Label Okpekpe International 10km Road Race. The event took place on Saturday in Okpekpe, Etsako East Local Government Area.
Organiser Applauds Security Measures
Mike Itemuagbor, Chief Executive Officer of Pamodzi Sports Marketing, the race organisers, highlighted that impeccable security arrangements were crucial for another seamless edition. In a statement, he emphasised that without the Edo State government's backing, securing the hilly and rustic town would have been unattainable.
“I really want to appreciate the Governor of Edo State, His Excellency Monday Okphebolo, for ensuring, like his predecessors, that we had another edition of the race without any security hitch or incident,” Itemuagbor said.
Proactive Measures Allay Fears
He noted that concerns about potential security challenges were raised before the race, but the governor's proactive steps reassured both organisers and participants. Security, he added, is as vital as logistics, sponsorship, and athlete preparation in an international event drawing global attention.
“When the eyes of the athletics world are on Nigeria, any lapse in security could overshadow the achievements of the athletes and the organisational strides made. It is not just about protecting runners and spectators; it is about safeguarding Nigeria’s reputation as a safe destination for international sporting events,” he said.
Race History and Prestige
First held in 2013, the Okpekpe race is Nigeria and West Africa’s first World Athletics Label road race. It has become a fixture on the global calendar. This year’s edition attracted over 2,000 elite and mass runners from more than a dozen countries.
Ethiopian duo Mamo Lema (29:37) and Silnat Bitwe (4:18) emerged champions in the men’s and women’s categories respectively, adding to the event’s growing prestige.
Nigeria’s Positive Image
Itemuagbor stated that the Edo State government has demonstrated that Nigeria is not as bleak as often portrayed. “The Okpekpe International 10km Road Race is a testimony that Nigeria is largely safe for business. Our guests from across the globe who come every year for the race are living proof of that. Nobody will be interested in coming to an unsafe environment, and this shows Nigeria is not as bad as it is being portrayed,” he said.
Despite security challenges like insurgency in the northeast and banditry in the northwest, the hitch-free race is evidence that international sporting events can be held safely with proper planning and government support. By ensuring robust security, the Edo government protected lives, safeguarded competition integrity, sponsor confidence, and trust from international athletics bodies.
For Nigeria, the race stands as a symbol of resilience and a reminder that global sporting events can thrive on its soil.
