The expanded 48-nation 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026, across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, will feature some of the finest national teams and footballers globally. Among the many accolades up for grabs, the Golden Boot—awarded to the tournament's top scorer—is highly coveted. Data analytics firm Opta has identified five leading candidates for the award, based on their current form and the likelihood of their teams progressing deep into the competition.
Harry Kane
Harry Kane, widely regarded as the world's best goalscorer, heads into the World Cup with an impressive tally of 72 goals for club and country this season, including 61 for Bayern Munich. The former Premier League star will captain England under Thomas Tuchel, aiming to surpass their semi-final and quarter-final finishes in 2018 and 2022 respectively.
Erling Haaland
Erling Haaland was instrumental in securing Norway's first World Cup qualification since 1998, netting 16 goals in eight qualifiers. The Manchester City forward clinched his third Premier League Golden Boot in four seasons, scoring 27 league goals, and is a natural contender for the World Cup's top scorer award.
Kylian Mbappe
Kylian Mbappe, the reigning Golden Boot holder with eight goals in Qatar 2022—including a hat-trick in the final—had a standout season at Real Madrid despite a trophyless campaign. He scored 42 goals across all competitions, winning both La Liga and Champions League Golden Boots. If he maintains his scoring rate, he could surpass Miroslav Klose as the all-time World Cup top scorer.
Lionel Messi
Lionel Messi has never won the World Cup Golden Boot despite accumulating 13 goals in the tournament, including seven in 2022. Argentina, the defending champions, are among the favorites, and Messi's evolving role could see him become the primary goal threat for Lionel Scaloni's side.
Cristiano Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo is set to appear at a record-equaling sixth World Cup, alongside Messi and Guillermo Ochoa. Despite scoring in every edition, he has only eight World Cup goals. The Al-Nassr star, chasing his 1,000th official goal, remains a compelling candidate for the Golden Boot.
Honorable mentions include Julian Alvarez, Ousmane Dembele, and Raphinha. Meanwhile, EA Sports has predicted Spain as the World Cup winner, a forecast supported by Opta's supercomputer, which gives La Roja a 16% chance of lifting the trophy.
